Our Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas Review:
Basking in the glory of a recent US$180 million makeover, the Tropicana has reinvented itself as South Beach Miami meets the desert. The upgrade was much needed so if you stayed here before, you can expect an entirely new and better resort experience.
The overall décor is pleasantly awash in pastels and natural light, and all of the rooms have been updated with massive plasma TVs, iPod docks and cool South Florida details like plantation shutters on windows. The chic tropical theme goes well with the dry desert heat, enhanced by stylish furnishings and crisp service.
The Tropicana’s casino isn’t huge by Vegas standards but it’s got a good atmosphere. The recent remodel replaced all the carpets, added new chairs to the slot machines and tiled the floors in white marble. The entertainment options aren’t as tempting as in other resorts on the Strip, but the Comedy Club is pretty good.
Perhaps the best feature of the Tropicana Las Vegas is its outdoor swimming pool. Covering more than four acres, the pool is surrounded by lush vegetation and green lawns. There is room to wander around and spread out, both in the water and on land. If lounging by the pool is high on your list of priorities, then the Tropicana should be your resort of choice.
For a more exclusive poolside experience, check out Nikki Beach, the resort’s high roller party hangout that offers luxurious daybeds and a nightclub vibe. No kids allowed, so this is where the adults come to play. At night, Club Nikki opens up and incorporates the outdoor pool area into its party scene. It’s very Miami, and very cool.
To keep in shape or rejuvenate yourself, Alexandra’s is on hand, providing both a beauty salon and a modern fitness centre. You’ll have to pay extra to use these facilities, however. Also just opened is the lovely Glow Spa, which is set to compete with some of the more renowned spas on the Strip. The restaurants at the Tropicana have also been reborn, with the Italian fare of Bacio by Carla Pellegrino and Biscayne Steak, Sea and Wine being two of the standouts.
As one of the oldest resorts in Las Vegas, the Tropicana has opened an exhibition to showcase the roots of Sin City. The Las Vegas Mob Experience features more than 1,000 relics, photographs and pieces of memorabilia dating from the era when mobsters ran the city. Covering 32 rooms under 22,000 square feet of space, it’s more like an interactive museum than a hotel exhibit.
With room rates so reasonable at the Tropicana, and a location just steps from other hot spots like the MGM Grand, Luxor and New York New York, this is a great option for visitors on a budget who don’t need top-flight amenities in their resort. Families love the Tropicana for its massive pool area and absence of sex-fuelled attractions, and its wedding chapel is consistently ranked the best in Vegas for bringing family and friends together for the big event.Been here?
