Our Planet Hollywood Hotel Las Vegas Review:
Planet Hollywood has managed to capture a niche of its own on the theme-heavy Vegas Strip, with its part rock and roll nightclubber and part smart businessman ambiance. Unlike other Vegas resorts, the reception area is dark, sleek and filled with the sounds of classic rock. This is a place for partiers, young couples and businesspeople. Only families might feel a bit out of place in this sexy nightclub environment.
A recent hotel-wide remodel has spruced up the 2,400 rooms in Planet Hollywood Las Vegas, adding much-needed deep soaking tubs and separate showers in the massive bathrooms. The beds are still those luxurious Sheraton Sweet Sleepers, a wonderful perk for sleeping off a big night, with the sound-proof rooms equally conductive to a good night’s rest.
Big 42-inch plasma screen TVs and a fun movie star motif in every room add to the entertainment. The only downside to the standard rooms is a lack of natural lighting. It’s rather dark in most of the rooms, especially the ones facing the pool. Expensive daily plug-in internet access is another bummer.
But the room rates are among the most reasonable on the Strip, especially considering the hotel’s perfect location right in the midst of all the big-name resorts. For good reason, most people who choose to stay at Planet Hollywood Hotel Las Vegas are here for the swanky nightlife. Two swish clubs, Prive and the Living Room, are both regular hangouts for celebrities and the jet-set crowd.
Even the casino feels like a nightclub. With its towering 75-foot ceilings and colourful lighting effects, it’s a fun place to gamble. Blackjack dealers wearing lingerie and go-go dancers in The Pit add to the sexy vibe. The sports book here is one of the best in Vegas, with 33 massive plasma televisions and jumbo screens.
Planet Hollywood’s shopping strip is called the Miracle Mile, a sweeping horseshoe with 170 shops and restaurants, many of which are affordable. The fitness centre is as average as it comes in Las Vegas, but the Mandara Spa with its amazing Turkish bath is a real highlight. As in most Vegas resorts, however, you’ll have to pay extra to use the facilities.
Sadly, the swimming pools at Planet Hollywood also fail to impress. They often feel uncomfortably crowded and have little in the way of ambiance like tropical foliage or water features. Concrete and empty cups ensure there’s nothing magical about lounging by the pool.
The dining options, however, is one area where this resort excels. Although there are (only) eight restaurants on site, they are diverse and good value. The Japanese cuisine of Koi is the standout, as is the impressive Strip House and its killer steaks. These high-flyer joints are complemented by the quick and easy Earl of Sandwich deli and a great buffet at Spice Market.
Planet Hollywood is a resort that really scores in several categories but falls flat on its face in others. But with room rates this good, it’s easy to overlook major failings like the pool to have a home base this comfortable and well positioned.Been here?
